Why you need to see a Paediatric Ophthalmologist?

Paediatric Ophthalmology and Squint has been recognized as a distinct Super speciality in the field of Ophthalmology by Vision 2020 “The Right to Sight” Initiative by Government of India, to provide highlight to Childhood blindness.

Childhood blindness refers to a group of diseases affecting children below 16 years of age and early adolescence, which when left untreated results in severe visual impairment, that are likely to
be untreatable later in life. There is no age limit of bringing a child for an eye check up.The major causes of Blindness in children vary widely from region to region, the most common being refractive errors, Lazy eye, Corneal problems due to infections, Vitamin A deficiency, Cataract, Glaucoma and Squint.

Early treatment of cataract and glaucoma may help to salvage whatever vision one can, followed by visual rehabilitation. Squint in children can lead to amblyopia, which causes irreversible loss of vision if untreated before the critical period i.e., 8 years of age.

Who is a Paediatric Ophthalmologist?

A Paediatric ophthalmologist and squint specialist is an ophthlamologist who has completed training in paediatric ophthlamology and strabismus. It is duty and responsibility of a Paediatric Ophthalmologist to treat and guide children and parents about various eye disorders. A general ophthalmologist neither has the specialized training nor the equipment to assess the visual needs of a child. We have a well-equipped paediatric eye care unit with a well trained Paedaitric Ophthlamologist and Squint Specialist.
